We’re all writers here! We all enjoy writing and hope that one day someone out in the world will read what we have written and fall in love with it, right? Well, that being the case, how can someone read what you’ve written if you never publish it? Here in our Circle, our goal is to help make the members feel welcomed and give them the tips and community they need to spread their voices and share their stories, whatever those may be. So here are some cool publishing tips that can help. And be on the look out for our next post dealing with agents, finding them, querying them and more!
You don’t have to have your final draft finished and ready for publication before you start marketing it!
That’s right! Have your idea thoroughly flushed out? Have some of it written down? You can start marketing it! One way to do that is to build up either a blog or social media presence. Both should be specifically geared toward spreading awareness about your novel.
Share teasers, what you’re working on, what your favorite characters like and dislike. If you make it fun and interesting, people will get curious, they’ll want to read the finished product and editors and agents alike will begin to take notice. So whether you self-publish or decide to go the traditional route, building up an interest in your book can be a great way to market it!
Stop limiting yourself!
A lot of times, writers can get very emotional when it comes to our work. That’s not a bad thing, in fact, it is a great thing. But at times that emotion lands us into trouble. We begin placing a deadline on everything. We say to ourselves, “I have to finish this draft by next month” or “If I’m not published by next year, I’m done.” We try to make everything fit into tiny and neat boxes but that isn’t how real life works. Much like with the characters you may be writing, life doesn’t always do exactly what you tell it to do. And even if you try to force yourself to finish that draft in a couple weeks, will it be as good as it could’ve been if you would’ve taken your time?
Additionally, some people have a particular way they wish to publish. It’s good to know what you want but you can’t be so stuck on being picked up by Random House that you ignore the possibility of working with someone else or even self-publishing. There are tons of tools available out there and many of the ladies in the Circle have self-published if you have questions. So don’t be afraid to try out something new and quite possibly different from what you were expecting.
When it comes to publication, a lot of authors get nervous and excited and all of that is normal but you can’t let yourself be limited either to a timeframe, a publisher or a publishing route.
