Reading In Color Book Giveaway

The purpose of this book giveaway is to give out hopefully thousands of books to the Northeast Ohio community. This will hopefully become an annual event to spread awareness on two fronts: literacy and the presence of people of color in publishing.

In recent years, it has been proven that young Ohioans are sadly falling short when it comes to literacy, as newer methods of learning have left them simply guessing what words mean and taken the fun out of reading. The Writing and Reading in Color Book Drive is an opportunity to make reading fun for children, preteens, teens and new adults once more. Books in all genres will be available for them to peruse and ask questions and they will be able to leave with some that suit their interests, not textbooks.

Morever, big chain bookstores such as Barnes & Noble have recently begun carrying less books overall, making the collection fairly sparse. And since 2022, less and less of those books are by people of color with claims of their not being profitable. Therefore, young people of color and marginalized identities have less opportunity to see themselves represented in what they read more than ever. Giving them free books written by people of color and marginalized identities that also center these identities will make them feel seen and heard.

Reaching the World Through Books

Books are an important resource and yet they are becoming scarcer and more areas are becoming book deserts. Not everyone can afford books and that is why the Circle has chosen to collect new and like-new books and use them to fill free little libraries in Central and Northeast Ohio.

If you are interested in donating your books so that more school-aged youth are able to read, please reach out to us at info@wocwriterscircle.org.

Anthologies By Women Of Color

We hope to continually publish anthologies written by women of color. Our first, Devotion in the Open Air is a cozy anthology centered on various types of affection.

The reason behind this is that BIPOC women are often pushed to the sidelines of publishing but we are powerful as are the stories we tell. We want to uplift and highlight these voices as often as we can.
