It is perfectly normal to get into a bit of a slump. Life gets complicated and tasks and responsibilities begin to pile onto your plate. That being said, we here at the Circle wanted to share some prompts that we’ve used in our monthly write-ins.

Prompts:

  1. Your character makes a meal and it reminds them of something/someone. Tell us what it is.
  2. Write a scene that takes place in the past.
  3. Write the scene that’s the opposite of your usual genre/writing style. (i.e. if you write romance, write an action sequence)
  4. Show us a dream/nightmare sequence.
  5. Your character’s ex shows up. Now what?
  6. Write the scene from an antagonists’ POV. (Can be a main or minor antagonist.)
  7. Your character finds something. What is it? What is its’ story?
  8. Write a scene where your character meets a new ally or a new enemy.
  9. Write from the perspective of an animal in the room.
  10. Your character goes out (to a cafe/tavern/some meeting place), what is the reason?
  11. Your character stumbles across a stray animal and decides to take it home. But when they get home they discover it isn’t what it seems. What is it?
  12. Write a scene from the POV of an inanimate object.
  13. Your character sees someone for the first time in years, who is it? Give us their story.
  14. Write a scene from the POV of another character.
  15. Your characters are traveling and they see something glimmering in the distance, what do they do? Why?
  16. We discover a secret. One of your main cast can speak an outlawed language. Why do they know it?
  17. Introduce a new species!
  18. Inside the room, there’s an item that seems well-loved, give us the backstory.
  19. A call comes into your main character from someone they least expect. Who is it and what do they want?
  20. Is it a curse? Or just plain bad luck. Bad things keep happening to your characters one after the other. What exactly happens?
  21. That person your character angrily swore to kill has wound up dead/comatose/missing. What does your character do?
  22. A twisted game (your choice) has landed your character in a shady place and in the debt of someone everyone else fears.
  23. Show us a fight scene. This can be an argument or a physical fight but the more heated the better.
  24. It’s midnight and a phone rings. The speaker is whispering.  What is the phone call about?
  25. Your antagonist and protagonist are forced together in a small space. What hijinks ensue?

If you decide to try out one, or multiple, of these prompts, don’t forget to let us know how it went! Also, for more prompts follow us on Twitter, where we post prompts every Wednesday!
