Hey ladies (and possible gents reading)! How are you today? Well, as the end of the year approaches, many people feel less motivated. Perhaps it’s because it gets dark so early now or because the weather can be a bit dreadful in certain areas of the world. Whatever the case may be, here is what we hope to be a bit of motivation. We are a circle of writers after all, whether published or not and it is important to keep that zeal going or else one day you may put that pen done and not pick it back up for who knows how long. So, below you’ll find a list of fun writing prompts that we hope encourages you.

And don’t forget! These prompts are to help you, they are just for fun. Whether they end up in your story or manuscript is completely up to you. Personally, I use them to do a bit of character exploration. How would my protagonist act in this situation? How would my antagonist act? What motivates them? What scares them? Who are they really? Besides, it can be fun to see your hardcore sleuth narrator in a toy store picking out teddy bears for her niece, right? Perhaps that is just me! Nevertheless, and without further ado, here are some prompts (only 25) to encourage you to keep writing!
Writing Prompts
- Write a story about someone trying to find someone in a crowd.
- Write a story that incorporates the last text you sent into it.
- Your character finds out that their spouse has been videoing their every move.
- Four people who don’t know each other are dealing with issues in their own lives, but have the local rec center in common.
- Years earlier, your character’s spouse disappeared. Now they’re back and acting like they were never gone.
- The residents of a retirement home put on their own version of American Idol, posting weekly videos that start to get popular.
- Your character runs into their crush. And finds out that they are dating the villain. How does your character react?
- Your character is trapped in a small place with a whining infant, an overbearing parent and a person with gas issues. Write a scene on how they would deal with it.
- Your character works at an airport. One day they are shown to a large hangar with all of the unclaimed luggage waiting. No one else is there. What do they do?
- A baker comes home to find a small animal waiting at their door. What happens next?
- Unknowingly, your character breaks a promise that they had forgotten about. What are the repercussions?
- Tell a story in the form of diary entries.
- Write a story told from the perspective of a piece of art.
- A student discovers that their school librarian isn’t human.
- Use a lyric from your favorite song. Make it the premise of your story.
- Your character discovers the cure for a rare disease but curing it will cost them dearly. What will it cost? What do they choose to do with their knowledge?
- Your character goes to lunch. There they meet you. What do you talk about?
- Your character gets a phone call. On the line is someone they never wished to hear from. Who is it? What do they talk about?
- A prison therapist starts a gardening club in the world’s most dangerous prison.
- Write a story in which people who hate each other are forced into each other’s presence. In this case, opposites don’t attract.
- A character who is artistic saves up and buys a set of tools (markers, paint brushes, pens, etc.). Now, whatever they draw comes to life.
- The house on the hill has always existed and as far as anyone can tell, it has never changed.
- The antagonist of your most recent story is forced to go to therapy. (What kind of therapy and what for is completely up to you!)
- Write about a person who switches places with their neighbor’s pet.
- Your character has just discovered that their spouse isn’t from Earth.

Great writing prompts! I’m leaning towards quite a few of them; the baker discovering a small animal waiting at their door is almost my life. LOL
