I’m thrilled to be a part of the Woman of Color Writing Circle. Representation matters. As a Black woman, I work to make sure my creative writing contributes to positive social norms. I write and publish books to model loving families, supportive friendships, a sense of community, and kindness. It’s important to me to lift up the stories of Black and brown lives. While my stories represent all people, I place a special emphasis on characters of African descent.
I was inspired to write my first book after I met a group of children whose story I felt compelled to tell. Children lead us. They change us. The desire to leave a world that is better for them pushes me. I am also very excited about a new fiction series I am writing with my sister.
I am a Christian and feel called to work in the service of my fellow human beings, especially people who have been consistently marginalized. I feel a responsibility to be a voice for others who are not able to use theirs.
My passion has evolved to giving more and expecting less; to making sure I contribute to my family and my community in ways that glorify God and make me proud.
As I have grown older, I have only further embraced my desire to help people and community. I’m part of a group of entrepreneurs who love their day job and still want to follow their passion during the “5-9” hours. One of the biggest obstacles so many of us have is staying accountable to our goals and dreams.
I love making connections, and I am most fulfilled when I can be a part of helping people develop and grow. I enjoy knowing the work I do makes a positive impact. Seeing the joy on a child’s face when they open up a book and see characters that look like them is pure gold.
Additionally, I help entrepreneurs who have trouble meeting their expectations and goals. A lot of people who have a high capacity for achievement spend more time helping others and put their own dreams to the side. I provide the support and tools they need to find and accomplish their purpose.
I constantly remind myself to not do things that I don’t want to do. We have one life to live. Mine is likely at least halfway over. I’m only grabbing brass rings as much as possible now. I would encourage people—especially women—to stop doubting themselves and adopt a mindset of being absolutely selfish when it comes to their lives – do exactly what you want. Mindset is EVERYTHING. What we believe, we become. Whatever we think, manifests.
My belief is that it is vital to stop deifying other people, like they have some shine that doesn’t exist in each one of us. The only difference between the uber-successful and the rest of us is persistence and a decision to not give upon reaching goals.
Also, remember all the glitter we see on the surface is only what people choose to show us. Everyone has bad times, frustration, tears, deflation, and doubts. When we push through those gray clouds, we emerge on the other side to beautiful bright blue skies, golden sunshine, and limitless possibilities. Believe you can and you will.
Who I Am:
I am a Louisville-based author. I am a USAF veteran and have lived all over the US. My favorite part of being an author is working with students, and talking about their ideas and dreams for the future. My most important role is mother – God blessed me with three children, teenage and older. They are a constant source of inspiration.
In addition to the military I’ve worked in public health, project management, consulting, taught college classes, and owned a restaurant. Experience and failure are my best teachers. In addition to my entrepreneurial pursuits I work at a Fortune 50 health and wellbeing company. When I’m not working, I enjoy hanging out with friends and family, eating good food, listening to funky music, and traveling to interesting places.
My dream job: philanthropist.
